"They help me remember that difficult moments don't have to determine the way I see myself or my future."
If you follow me on social media, you know that I create and post daily tidbits on different topics and awareness. This month, August, happens to be National Wellness Month and I have previously created a brief social media post about the value of affirmations. This ignited a fire within me to do a complete blog because I'm so passionate about this subject.
Positive affirmations have become an integral part of my daily life. I can't express enough the value they add to my life. What started as simply repeating encouraging words has grown into something I genuinely love and feel passionate about. Reciting daily affirmations gives me an opportunity to INTENTIONALLY speak positivity, encouragement, confidence, and hope into my life.
For me, affirmations are more than inspirational words. They are daily reminders that the way I speak to myself matters.
Where My Inner Voice Begins to Blossom
We all have an inner voice. Throughout the day, our minds can become filled with thoughts about our responsibilities, worries, mistakes, goals, relationships, and everything happening around us. Sometimes, without even realizing it, that inner conversation can become more critical than encouraging.
That's one reason I love reciting affirmations.
When I say things like:
I am capable.
I am worthy.
I am growing.
I choose peace.
I trust my journey.
I can handle what today brings.
I am intentionally giving my mind something positive to focus on.
Affirmations don't mean that I pretend difficult moments don't exist. They help me remember that difficult moments don't have to determine the way I see myself or my future. They are tools that helps me navigate through the difficult times.
Words That Have Become Part of My Spirit
I have developed a genuine love and passion for daily affirmations because I enjoy the feeling of beginning my day with INTENTION.
There is something powerful about speaking encouraging words before the noise of the day takes over. I know you may have heard it before but it's worth repeating. There is power in the tongue. The words you say hold weight. Y'all remember the saying “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me?” Well that was a whole lie lol 😂. Words can hurt as well as heal. Be intentional in your speech.
My affirmations remind me of the person I am becoming. They encourage me to recognize my strengths, appreciate my progress, and give myself grace in the areas where I'm still growing. Some days, an affirmation may be centered around confidence. Another day, I may need peace, patience, courage, gratitude, strength, or hope. That's one of the beautiful things about affirmations. They can meet me wherever I am.
Turning Down the Voice of Doubt
Positive thinking doesn't mean that I never experience negative thoughts. I do. I'm human. Negative thoughts will creep in every once in a while. However, I've learned that I don't have to give every negative thought permission to stay. When self-doubt appears, I can remind myself that I believe in my ability to grow and learn. When I'm feeling overwhelmed, I can give myself permission to move through today at my own pace. When something doesn't happen according to my plans, I can trust that one difficult moment does not define my entire journey.
This practice helps me become more aware of how I'm speaking to myself. Instead of automatically accepting every discouraging thought as truth, I can challenge it with something healthier and more compassionate.
Planting Words I Want to Grow
One affirmation may not completely change the way I think overnight. That's why I believe consistency is so important. Repetition is the key.
Reciting affirmations every day creates a habit of INTENTIONALLY choosing encouraging language. The more I practice speaking positively to myself, the easier it becomes to recognize negative thought patterns when they appear. Over time, I'm not simply memorizing positive statements. I'm practicing a different way of responding to myself.
And just like any healthy habit, small moments of consistency can eventually create meaningful change. I have my youngin repeat “everything is working out for me” when she's feeling anxious or overwhelmed. I now often hear her reciting it without me even prompting her to do so. That's the powerful behind consistency and repetition.
Becoming, One Affirmation at a Time
One of my favorite things about affirmations is that they don't require me to have everything figured out. I can be growing and still be proud of myself. I can have difficult days and still believe better days are possible. I can make mistakes and still recognize my worth. I can be uncertain about what's next and still move forward with confidence.
Affirmations remind me that personal growth isn't about becoming perfect. It's about continuing to learn, evolve, heal, discover, and become more intentional about the life I'm creating.
Creating a Ritual of Beautiful Words
I believe affirmations become even more meaningful when they feel personal. Sometimes I choose an affirmation based on exactly what I need that day. If I'm struggling with patience, my affirmation may focus on patience. If I'm stepping outside my comfort zone, I may choose something about courage. If life feels especially busy, my affirmation may simply remind me to protect my peace.
I can recite my affirmations aloud, write them in my journal, place them somewhere I will see them, or quietly repeat them throughout the day. There isn't one perfect way to practice affirmations. What matters most to me is making the words meaningful.
Speaking Light Into My Own Life
My love for affirmations continues to grow because they remind me that I have a choice in how I speak to myself. I can constantly remind myself of everything that could go wrong or I can remind myself of everything I've already overcome. I can focus only on how far I still have to go or I can celebrate how far I've already come. I can allow one difficult day to convince me that I'm failing or I can remind myself that tomorrow gives me another opportunity to try again. That is the mindset I want to continue nurturing.
Positive affirmations aren't magic words that make every problem disappear. For me, they are something much more practical and personal. They are INTENTIONAL reminders to treat myself with the same encouragement, patience, kindness, and compassion that I would offer someone I care about.
So every day, I continue to speak life into my journey.
I am growing.
I am learning.
I am becoming more confident in who I am.
I am worthy of peace, happiness, and love.
I trust my journey and honor my progress.
And most importantly, I choose to speak to myself in a way that helps me grow.
Because the words I repeat today can help shape the mindset I carry into tomorrow.
