Dear Diary, The Seasons Are Changing Again! Journaling Through The Seasons

journaling on an autumn day

"What am I most grateful for in this current season of my life?"

It’s the start of the new school year. The mark of the beginning of the season changing. We will be saying goodbye to summer and heading into fall soon. Each season brings something new with it. Every time the seasons begin to shift, I feel it. I don't just feel it outside my window, but inside myself too. The air feels different, the rhythm of the days change, and suddenly I find myself adjusting to new routines, new light, and even new emotions. Over the years, I’ve realized that journaling is one of the most grounding practices that helps me move through these transitions with more clarity and peace.

For me, seasonal changes often stir up mixed feelings. When summer turns to fall, for instance, I feel both excited about crisp mornings and cozy sweaters. However, I also feel a little nostalgic saying goodbye to long evenings and bright sunshine. Winter, with its shorter days, sometimes makes me crave more stillness. While spring tends to awaken something restless and hopeful in me. Journaling has become the space where I can meet those feelings honestly.

Writing during these times gives me perspective. When the seasons shift, I often notice changes in my mood or energy. Journaling allows me to track those patterns and remind myself that it’s natural to feel different as the world around me changes too. I’ll write about what I’m letting go of with one season and what I want to invite in with the next. It feels almost like a conversation with myself. It's an intentional pause to honor where I am.

Another thing I love is how journaling helps me set small seasonal intentions. In the fall, I might write about wanting to slow down and savor warm meals at home. In the spring, I might jot down a desire to spend more time outdoors, reconnecting with nature as it comes alive again. Having those intentions written down gives me a gentle guide, instead of just letting life rush past me.

Most of all, journaling helps me appreciate the beauty of transition itself. Life, just like nature, is never static. Writing reminds me that change isn’t something to resist. It's something to move through with curiosity and grace. Looking back on old entries from past seasons always gives me perspective too. I see how much I’ve grown, what I’ve overcome, and the little joys I might have otherwise forgotten.

So whenever I feel unsettled by the changing of the seasons, I turn to my journal. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Sometimes just a few lines about what I’m feeling or noticing in the world around me is enough. It’s my way of grounding, reflecting, and honoring the cycles of both nature and myself. The seasons will always keep shifting, but journaling helps me shift with them. If you haven’t tried journaling through the seasonal shifts, I encourage you to give it a try. If you’d like to try this practice yourself, here are a few prompts I use when the seasons are changing:

1. What am I most grateful for in this current season of my life?

2. What am I ready to let go of as this season ends?

3. What do I want to invite in during the new season ahead?

4. How does the change in weather, light, or atmosphere affect my energy and mood?

5. What small rituals or habits can I create to honor this season?

6. Looking back on this past season, what lessons or moments stand out the most?

Sometimes I answer all of them, and other times I just pick one and write freely. The beauty is that there’s no “right way”, only the way that helps you feel more connected to yourself and the world around you.

Thank you Daphne. I love journaling as well. I've done it for years while spending time with God in the morning. While it's edifying and uplifting, it clarifys things for me too. Enjoy this most beautiful day my friend.
